For a lifetime of valuable contribution to the development of paediatric surgery and children’s health promotion, professor at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Faculty of Medicine, head of the Department of Paediatric Surgery and surgeon at the Children’s Clinical University Hospital, Arnis Eņģelis has been nominated and on 28 September 2018 will be presented with the Prof. Aleksandrs Bieziņš Award which is the highest recognition in paediatric surgery.

The paediatric surgeon, Prof. Arnis Eņģelis was nominated for the award by the Latvian Association of Paediatric Surgeons and the association’s decision was supported by the Children’s Clinical University Hospital, Latvian Medical Association, the Ministry of Health, Pauls Stradiņš Museum for History of Medicine and RSU.

Professor Arnis Eņģelis has devoted 42 years of his life to paediatric surgery, all these years remaining loyal to RSU and the Children’s Clinical University Hospital, he has helped thousands of patients, been active in paediatric abdominal surgery, introduced minimally invasive pediatric surgery in Latvia, mentor and teacher of numerous students, medical residents and paediatric surgeons. A.Enģelis is also the author of over 100 scientific publications.

His commitment and excellence in work has already been honoured by other recognition awards of the Children’s Clinical University Hospital and the professor is also holder of Andrejs Priedkalns Award.

The Aleksandrs Bieziņš Award was founded in 1987 with the aim to honour outstanding paediatric surgeons of Latvia for their commitment to the development of paediatric surgery and achievements in practical work and research. The Aleksandrs Bieziņš Award is the highest national professional award in paediatric surgery. Until now the award has been presented to seven professionals: Jānis Gaujēns, Tamāra Čēma, Haralds Voskis, Ēriks Jakobsons, Jānis Dobelis, Marija Liepiņa and Jānis Krasts.
