Syllabus of postgraduate 2nd level professional study programme “Residency in medicine”

Goal of the programme: to ensure acquisition and improvement of theoretical knowledge and practical skills according to the requirements of the endocrinology specialty to prepare doctors for certification in endocrinology according to regulatory documents of the Republic of Latvia.

Eligibility: MD, degree of Internist


  • Theoretical education – acquiring knowledge on epidemiology, incidence and mortality of endocrine diseases, physiology, division and structure of endocrine organs and their hormones.

  • Students acquire knowledge on different diseases of endocrine organs, newest methods of diagnostics and treatment.

  • A lot of attention is paid to risk factors of different diseases and their possible diagnostics and prevention.

  • During three years endocrinology residents acquire knowledge and practical skills in diagnostics and treatment of endocrine diseases all over Latvia (incl. also rare endocrine diseases, andrology, gynecological endocrinology and childhood and adolescent endocrinology), as well as supplement their knowledge about the etiology and pathogenesis of these diseases (see below full content of the programme).

    • During the 1st year of the studies residents acquire: endocrine diseases I (incl. training for diabetes mellitus patients), diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy and renal replacement therapy.

    • During the 2nd year of the studies residents acquire: endocrine diseases II, diagnostic radiology of endocrine diseases, diabetes mellitus and pregnancy, childhood and adolescent endocrinology I (incl. childhood gynecological endocrinology). This year residents start to perform their clinical and scientific work.

    • During the 3rd year of the studies residents acquire: continue mastering childhood and adolescent endocrinology II (incl. childhood gynecological endocrinology), diagnostic radiology and radiation therapy in endocrinology, andrology, laboratory diagnostics, endocrine diseases III (incl. andrology). This year residents continue to perform their clinical and scientific work.

Objective of the programme: to ensure residents a possibility acquire knowledge, skills and attitude which would ensure them a possibility to successfully obtain an endocrinologist's certificate and to practice as a professional in endocrinology, diabetology and metabolism in Latvia, as well as to work in the European Union, if required.



  • The education programme was mastered in full scope; all rotation cycles were attended, 80% of theoretical activities were attended, the final examination was successfully passed;

  • During studies residents must work in a specialized endocrinology department or in a consulting endocrinologist's room, other specialized departments (during rotation cycles) and consulting rooms, supervised by an endocrinologist or other appropriate specialist entitled to teach.

  • To recognize and describe different endocrine problems in humans. To define possible endocrine pathology, to systematize diagnostic examination and to organize case-specific treatment.


Having completed the programme the student will be able:

  • To independently use medical problem solution skills to perform functions of a highly qualified professional in prevention, diagnostics, treatment of and care for endocrine diseases;

  • Skillfully performs practical manipulations;

  • Is able to work in a Health Care organization, as well as education and research;

  • Independently formulates and critically analyses complex problems in clinical endocrinology;

  • Critically evaluates researches in the field of medical science; performs necessary additional analysis, substantiates decisions, if required;

  • To train low-grade medical personnel and diabetes mellitus patients.


  • In three years' time students will acquire knowledge and practical skills complying with LR CM Regulations No. 268 and recommendations of the European Union required for an endocrinologist to perform practical work.

  • Students will acquire rights to freely work as endocrinologists all over Latvia.


  • Reports on work during studies

  • Submission of the prepared scientific research work and its oral defense

  • Residency State exam theoretical examination according to the program complying with Endocrinologist's certification examination in Latvia
