Goal of the programme: to provide acquisition and improvement of theoretical knowledge and practical skills according to the requirements of the speciality of Forensic Medicine Expert with the purpose to prepare doctors for certification and independent work in the speciality of forensic medicine according to the laws and regulations of the Republic of Latvia.

Eligibility: MD degree.


The study programme encloses acquirement of theoretical knowledge via seminars and lectures and practical skills via various study courses. The study programme encloses development and defence of scientific research work and independent research work in the 2nd – 3rd study year of residency, monthly duties, and pedagogical work.



Knowledge obtained during the studies demonstrate profound perception in medicine as general and correspond to the requirements of speciality, provide creative thinking in practice and research, abilities to carry out interdisciplinary cooperation and allows successfully to pass certification exam and to start independent practical work.


Acquired practical skills in all disciplines and inspection methods of forensic medicine, knowledge of how to use instruments of forensic medicine and study (research) methods, as well as to fix, analyse and assess results and to summarise the study results in kind of expert’s opinion; ability to work in organisation of expertise, as well as in education and research.


The obtained competencies: to carry out unaided expertise of forensic medicine of live persons, medical documents, corpses and material evidences; ability to carry out activities expected for experts of forensic medicine in criminal process, civil process or administrative process; obtained preliminary knowledge and skills for execution of scientific-research and pedagogical work; acquired ethical code of doctors and experts of forensic medicine, abilities to communicate with specialists and society as well as to give first medical aid; abilities to continue further education and to introduce innovations in their work.


Examination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills at the end of each study course by evaluating the results in 10 grade system; Residency state exam: defence of independent scientific research, report on executed work during residency and on qualification improvement activities; oral examination of the entire theoretical course of forensic medicine.
