Goal of the programme: To provide the acquirement and the development of theoretical knowledge and practical skills according the regulation requirements of the family physician’s speciality, to train a specialist who is able to ensure consistent, continuous and comprehensive care of the patient and his/her family members and to help the patient to make a choice between offered services of health care, ensuring abilities of patients for better physical, mental and social action, to train a specialist who is able to assess health condition of the patient, to diagnose illnesses and to treat according stated competences. To train a physician for the specialty’s certification of a family physician according the regulatory documents of the Republic of Latvia.

Eligibility: MD degree.

CONTENT OF THE PROGRAMME

To provide opportunities for residents to acquire and to achieve knowledge stated in the regulation of the family (general practice) physician’s specialty, skills and abilities in promotion, maintenance of public health, in prevention of diseases in diagnostics and treatment of early diseases, in rehabilitation, in long-term observation of chronic patients, in therapy of the emergency conditions and in palliative care.

The necessary knowledge for the family physician’s speciality during the study process and its corresponding practical action in clinical medicine is divided into:

  • A family physician diagnoses, assesses health condition of the patient, treats disease individually and acts independently;

  • A family physician diagnoses, assesses health condition of the patient, treats disease independently, if necessary using consultations of other specialists;

  • A family physician assesses health condition of the patient and forms the hypothesis, but for the confirmation of the diagnosis and for the further treatment sends the patient to other specialists of health care, participates in the assessment of the therapy results of the patient with chronic diseases in cooperation with these specialists and after the clinical recovery of the patient or after the exacerbation phase of disease continues permanent observation of the patient’s health condition and organizes his/her rehabilitation.

  • A family physician diagnoses and sends the patient to hospital for further treatment to ensure the maintenance of life after successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation, as well as to start surgical or trauma treatment and after clinical recovery of the patient organizes his/her rehabilitation and implementation of recommendations of other specialists.

During the studies residents will acquire knowledge and skills in the six main competences of family medicine:

  • Specific problem-solving skills

  • Comprehensive approach to problem-solving

  • Community-oriented health care

  • Holistic approach

STUDY OUTCOMES

After completion of studies the resident will have acquired knowledge and skills, competence: in health care of a child and adolescents, in health care of women, in health care of men, in elderly health care; in diagnostics of acute and chronic syndromes and diseases, in tactics of treatment, in observation and in patients’ sending to specialists; in emergency help.

After completion of studies the resident will have acquired knowledge and skills, competence in the six main competences of family medicine:

  • Organization / management of primary health care

  • Person-oriented care

  • Specific problem-solving skills

  • Comprehensive approach to problem solving

  • Community-oriented health care

  • Holistic approach

During the study process the resident has acquired knowledge and skills, competence about the latest achievements of medicine in the profession of a family physician.

Presents knowledge about risk factors of diseases, etiology, primary and secondary prevention, knows the borders of a family physician’s competence and is able to orient in clinical practice guidelines, in treatment of medicine sub-sectors and in nosologies, acquires and uses the latest examination and treatment methods.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Shows the understanding in the sector of health education, is able to organize health care related measures in interests of public health.

Understand diagnostics (including laboratory, morphology, instrumental, non-instrumental and beam diagnostics), differential diagnostics, pharmacologically-induced (clinical pharmacology pharmacotherapy) and non-pharmacologically-induced (diet therapy, physiotherapy) treatment, rehabilitations and aspects of secondary prevention in sub-sectors of medicine and nosologies.

Strengthened skills in examination, treatment methods and in health promotion activities during the educational programme of family medicine.

Tests

Knowledge tests after each study course. During the Residency State exam students defend the research paper – the amount of the scientifically practical theme is from 15 to 25 pages. The reviewer provides a written assessment (review) before the defence of the research paper.
