Syllabus of postgraduate 2nd level professional study programme “Residency in medicine”

Goal of the programme: to provide the acquisition and improvement of theoretical knowledge and practical skills to prepare the doctor for certification in the specialty of medical geneticist according to normative documentation of Latvian Republic.

Theoretical teaching in a form of problem lectures and seminars in accordance with the program; practical study courses; practical tutorials and supervisions; facilitation of the personal development; pedagogical practice; research.



Defines the role of genetic factors in health, inherited and multifactorial disease, outlines how population ancestry may affect the frequency of Mendelian diseases and of susceptibility alleles. Describes how changes to DNA and chromosomes can affect gene function or dosage. Describes the main modes of Mendelian and non-Mendelian inheritance, clinical indicators that suggest an inherited predisposition to cancer, clinical features of common Mendelian diseases and chromosomal disorders. Recognizes the clinical implications of incomplete penetrance, variation in expression, anticipation, new mutations. Lists main laboratory techniques to investigate genetic material and their advantages and limitations. Describes the main methods for sampling genetic material for prenatal diagnosis. Outlines major ethical issues in genetics.


Takes a family history, constructs and interprets a pedigree, identifies patients with, or at risk of, a genetic condition, delivers genetic counseling in accordance with current aims, methods, and practice, calculates recurrence risks in Mendelian disease, illustrates the concept of risk in a manner that can be understood by a patient, interprets genetics laboratory report, delivers the genetic information in an understandable, non-directive manner.


Chooses appropriate investigation plan to make a diagnosis, designates the investigations, evaluates the possibility of heterogeneity in a genetic disease and the potential impact on diagnosis, makes genetic diagnosis according to evidence-based medical practice, gives the information of the inheritance mechanism, family planning, natural course and prognosis of genetic disease to the patient, recommends referrals to other medical specialists according to medical issues predicted by genetic syndrome, prescribes specific medications for genetic disease.


  • Evaluation of resident's practical skills and theoretical knowledge after every rotation discipline.

  • Residency State exam:

    • examination of theoretical knowledge by multi-choice questions

    • presentation of scientific clinical or applied research

    • hands in to the commission a report about the accomplishments during the studies.

The State exam is rated by a grade, information about the examination is reported in a protocol, which is signed by head of the committee and all members of committee.
