Syllabus of postgraduate 2nd level professional study programme “Residency in medicine”

Goal of the programme: to give to the resident theoretical knowledge and practical skills according to requirements of regulation of haematology specialty, in order to prepare for certification in haematology specialty corresponding to laws and regulations of Republic of Latvia.

Eligibility: MD degree.


Study programme consists of theoretical part, residents will have lectures and seminars. Residents will get practical skills during 2 years in haematological departments and during other study courses – internal diseases, including endocrinology, rheumatology and cardiology, infection diseases, oncology, radiation therapy, pediatric haematology, immunology, transfusiology, laboratory diagnostics. Resident also get pedagogical skills in teaching students and skills in scientific work.



Should get knowledge about haematological diseases, diagnostic, diferential diagnosis and treatment methods, knowledge about chemotherapy, radiation treatment, symptomatic and palliative treatment of haematological diseases. Resident also should have knowledge about autologous and allogenic stem cell transplantation. During postgradual learning resident can have requested for the haematology sertification knowledge in other spealities – transfusiology and immunohaematology, pediatric haematology, rheumatology, endocrinology, internal diseases, oncology, radiation therapy, laboratory diagnostic and infection diseases.


Practical skills to examine haematological patient, performe bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, to prescribe future laboratory and visual diagnostic methods, make diferencialdiagnosis, to make haematological diagnosis according define criterias and classifications, to make treatment plan for haematological patient, to know how to manage treatment and future control of the haematologaical patient.


Will be able to work as haematologist in both hospital and outpatient clinic settings, to participate in decision-making discussions and to legally justify own opinion. To make decisions without assistance and to take responsibility for made decisions. To originate and sign medical documents, to manage (perform diagnosis and treatment) patients with haematological diseases.


Examination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills at the end of each study course by evaluating the results in 10 grade system. Residency State exam: defence of independent scientific research, report on executed work during residency and on qualification improvement activities; oral examination of the entire theoretical course

Study language: Latvian.
