Syllabus of postgraduate 2nd level professional study programme “Residency in medicine”

Goal of the programme: to provide theoretical knowledge and practical skills according to internal medicine doctor speciality Statute demands for physician preparing for certification in internal medicine speciality according to the Latvian Republic's standard.

Eligibility: MD degree.


Duration of the study programme is 3 years. Theoretical course consists of 33 seminars per year and the problem lectures. Practical training includes study courses in accordance with the specialty programme.


Deep and extensive knowledge and understanding in medicine in general and in particular of internal medicine and related medical specialities. The gained knowledge will fulfill the requirements for speciality certification according to LR CM Regulations of speciality.

Knowledge of ethiology, pathogenesis, clinics, diagnostics, differential diagnostics, treatment and prophylaxis of the internal diseases will be at the forefront of the science and the professional field laying the basis for creative thinking in clinical practice and in research, as well as the ability to act in an interdisciplinary field.

Having completed the programme the resident will possess all the skills allowing to work effectively, safely and independently in clinical cases of internal diseases.

He/she will exhibit skills and practice to solve creatively clinical problems, to analyse and criticaly estimate quality and results of work. He/she will have experience to use novel information and technologies for independent education and treatment of patients. Residents will own skills of empathic communication with patients, will maintain good peer relationship and integrate into team work.

Competencies: ability to work efficiently in internal medicine due to extended knowledge, skills and practice. Ability to conduct clinical research, implement public education, argued discussion about complicated medical problems, continuous use of information for lifelong independent medical education.


Regular control of knowledge – in seminars and during clinical practise. Analysis of clinical cases, clinical situation tests, tests of multiple choise, algorithms of clinical examination and treatment. At the end of each study course – written test , extended answers to two questions of the study course programme.

Residency State exam: residents defend their research work. Theoretical knowledge is evaluated by means of written multiple choice test and by answering the questions.
