Goal of the programme: provide acquirement and perfection of knowledge and practical skills meeting the requirements of nephrology specialty regulations in order to prepare physician for certification in specialty of nephrology according to laws and regulations of Republic of Latvia.

Eligibility: medical degree, certification in Internal medicine.

CONTENT OF THE PROGRAMME

Resident practices medicine at P. Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital acquiring:

  • Advanced clinical thinking and skills needed for speciality of nephrology

  • Pedagogical and management skills as well as scientific research skills

  • Theoretical knowledge – of clinical nephrology and hypertension, renal replacement therapy (peritoneal dialysis (PD), haemodialysis (HD)), kidney transplantation, fluid and electrolyte as well as acid-base metabolism.

  • Theoretical learning includes both — problem lectures once a month and specialized seminars 3 times a month.

  • Practical training – minimum time spent in weeks in main disciplines as in table.

STUDY OUTCOMES

  • Acquired broad knowledge in nephrology, including detailed comprehension of etiology, pathogenesis, clinical findings and treatment of kidney diseases and hypertension, as well as renal replacement therapy (haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, kidney transplantation), detailed homeostatic control mechanisms in the human body (acid-base and fluid as well as electrolyte balance).

  • Established all the necessary practical skills in supervising the completion of diagnostic tests and treatment as well as the technique of renal replacement therapy, also performing specific diagnostic (renal biopsy, ultrasonography) and medical (central venous and peritoneal catheter implantation) procedures and providing haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

  • Acquired competence of serving all the duties of nephrologist, deciding upon vital issues, managing nephrology/ dialysis units, dealing with the state programme financing, giving expert consultations.

Test

  1. Evaluation of resident's practical skills and theoretical knowledge after every rotation discipline.

  2. State exam:

  • examination of theoretical knowledge by questions and discussion with expert group;

  • presentation of scientific clinical or applied research, which should submitted to the committee in written form one month in advance;

  • submits a report on the accomplishments during the studies to the committee.

The Residency state exam is rated by a grade, information about the examination is reported in a protocol, which is signed by head of the committee and all members of committee.
