Goal of the programme: to provide theoretical knowledge and practical skills according to of speciality regulation in paediatric infectious diseases in Latvia and prepare for certification in the specialty

Eligibility: certified paediatricians or after third year of residency in paediatrics.

Upon successful completion of residency doctor will have acquired knowledge that will allow to:

  • Describe the epidemiology of childhood infectious diseases;

  • Understand children's infectious disease etiology, pathogenesis, pathophysiology, symptomatology;

  • Understand the nature of the immune system disorders and types of children, with special emphasis on immune deficiency states;

  • Decide on the childhood infectious diseases and immune deficiency conditions in diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment and prevention;

  • Understand the clinical microbiology fundamentals and clinical use;

  • Understand the other Infectious diseases associated with children's specialties as possible.


Upon successful completion of residency doctor will have mastered the following skills:

  • Provide assistance to both acute and chronic infectious disease diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation for children under tertiary health care level;

  • Diagnose and treat children with immune deficiency conditions for Latvian available technology level;

  • Within their specialties to provide advice to patients, their relatives and other medical personnel;

  • Actively participate in the children's disease prevention, community prevention, public health, in education of non-certified doctors and medical students and children's health research;

  • Sensitively to build professional relationships with patients and their careers, colleagues, taking into account cultural and ethnic peculiarities, national and global children's rights, ethics, professional secrecy and confidentiality;

  • Avoid unnecessary tests, unnecessary and unjust treatment and the child's hospitalization;

  • Work in a team, work with parents and other community groups;

  • Perform manipulations according speciality regulation.


Upon successful completion of residency physician-certified in paediatric infectious diseases is able to:

  • understand scientific principles of infectious diseases, microbiology / virology and immune response and is competent to work within the framework of clinical care in a specialized tertiary care unit and inpatient and outpatient phase;

  • understand the speciality related to laboratory procedures (including safety issues);

  • use specialized diagnostic and treatment methods;

  • interpret results and use them in the patient's health care;

  • manage the diagnosis and treatment of children with complex immunological disorders;

  • examine and assess the conditions/ diseases mentioned in the speciality regulation;

  • make patient's individual algorithms for examination and treatment;

  • collect material for the laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases;

  • evaluate the results, taking into account the nature of the method of and child's age;

  • plan infection control;

  • use the research methodology, teaching and presentation techniques, clinical and financial management skills, examine ethical issues relating to research and clinical work management;

  • understand prevention strategies such as vaccination issue and infectious disease outbreaks in medical institutions and society;

  • carry out qualitative research into new diagnostics and treatments;

  • be able to develop a new specialist training.

Specialist in paediatric infectious diseases, on completion of training, will have the ability to carry out a consultation with a patient and family, assess clinical presentations, order investigations, make diagnoses, and negotiate a management plan, provide immediate care of paediatric emergencies, including first aid and resuscitation, prescribe diets, drugs, fluids and blood products, carry out practical procedures, communicate effectively in a speciality context, apply ethical and legal principles in practice, assess psychological and social aspects of a patient's illness, apply the principles, skills and knowledge of evidence-based medicine, use information and information technology effectively in a speciality context, apply scientific principles, method and knowledge to paediatric infectious diseases practice and research, promote health at the level of the individual and the population, and work effectively in a healthcare system, be a professional (professional attributes, professional working), expert, the global specialist in paediatric infectious diseases.



During the training, the residents have to master full study program: all study courses are compulsory, the theoretical study - not less than 80%, at least on-call 48 hours a month, module tests for practical skills and theoretical knowledge; Residency State exam, comprised of theoretical test, resident in the presence of the commission upholds the scientific, clinical or applied research, commission submit a summary evaluation of the progress made during the study.
