Goal of the programme: to provide the theoretical knowledge and skills accordingly the demands of the regulations of the specialty Pediatric Rheumatology, to set the stage for the certification in the specialty agreeably to the laws and regulations of the Republic of Latvia and European Union (the program meets the requirements of the education of Pediatric Rheumatology field, developed by the European Pediatric Rheumatology Society (PRES) and approved by the European Union for Medical Specialists (UEMS) pediatric section for doctors preparing for certification in specialty of Pediatric Rheumatology, according to the Latvian normative documents.

Eligibility: MD degree, degree of Paediatrician

  • Extended and broadened knowledge and understanding of medicine and pediatric rheumatology. The knowledge will comply with requirements for specialty certification and meet high standards in the field, both scientifically and professionally. It will ensure creative thinking in clinical practice and research, as well as improve abilities for working in multidisciplinary fields. Ability to recognize and define acute and chronic rheumatic diseases. Knowledge in ethiopathogenesis, diagnostics, differential diagnostics, treatment and prophylaxis of the rheumatic diseases accordingly to the regulations of the specialty.

  • Skills that will safely, effectively, ethically and independently allow to understand the nature of specific problem, diagnostic algorithms and to provide specialized professional emergency care, as well as skills that allows to perform appropriate diagnostic, differential diagnosis, treatment procedures and prevention measures. Ability to carry out further work, learning or research in complex and unpredictable circumstances and, if necessary, modify them with new approaches. Physicians have the ability of self-development, can communicate well with colleagues, a variety of patients and their parents, have the skills to educational and research work and skills in organization of work.

  • Competencies – knowledge, skills and attitude for clinical work, research, public education in children's musculoskeletal system and autoimmune connective tissue diseases diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention; ability to plan and organize professional competence improvement and development, able to take responsibility for the staff group work and capable of innovation and entrepreneurship.


The resident's theoretical knowledge and practical skills are evaluated at the end of every rotation dicipline and at some education steps.

Residency State exam: theoretical knowledge evaluation (three written questions and two case studies), scientific or clinical research work defendence (the work is submitted to the comittee 10 days before the defendence in a written form), summary of the work done during the time of training.
