Goal of the programme: to promote acquisition and improvement of theoretical and practical skills according to pediatric surgery speciality bylaws in order to prepare doctor for certification in pediatric surgery speciality agreeably to normative documents of the Republic of Latvia.

- CONTENT OF THE PROGRAMME
Theoretical education is based on theoretical seminars (3 seminars per month or 33 seminars per year). According to study program length in different disciplines certain number of seminars is organized.
The first year consists of 16 weeks course in general pediatric emergency surgery followed by 20 weeks course in general surgery and 8 weeks course in adult thoracic surgery
The second year consists of several speciality cycles close to pediatric surgery in adult hospitals: urology (8 weeks), oncology (8 weeks), cardiovascular surgery (8 weeks), traumatology-orthopaedics and purulent surgery (12 weeks) and plastic surgery (8 weeks).
The third year studies consist of pediatrics and neonatology (20 weeks), pediatric anesthesiology and intensive care (8 weeks), pediatric rentgenology (4 weeks) and pediatric abdominal surgery (12 weeks).
The fourth and fifth years are devoted to pediatric surgical disciplines at the University Children’s Hospital. These disciplines are: pediatric proctology (8 weeks), pediatric thoracic surgery (12 weeks), newborn surgery (8 weeks), pediatric oncology (8 weeks), pediatric gynaecology (4 weeks), pediatric neurosurgery (4 weeks), pediatric urology (12 weeks), pediatric purulent surgery (8 weeks), pediatric combustions (4 weeks) and pediatric traumatology-orthopaedics (20 weeks).
- STUDY OUTCOMES
Extended and broadened knowledge and understanding of medicine and pediatric surgery. The knowledge will comply with requirements for speciality certification and meet high standards in the field, both scientifically and professionally. It will ensure creative thinking in clinical practice and research, as well as improve abilities for working in multidisciplinary fields. Ability to recognize and define surgical pathological conditions in pediatric patients. Knowledge in etiopathogenesis, diagnostics, diferential diagnostics, treatment and prophylaxis of the surgical conditions accordingly to the regulations of the specialty.
The acquired skills will allow the resident to work safely, effectively, ethically and independently in clinical cases of surgical diseases in children. Skills will allow to apply modern technologies in treatment, ability to perform operations independently, to use medical literature and to orient themselves in medical documentation, to perform duties independently in emergency department providing urgent and ambulatory health care for children.
Knowledge, skills and attitude for clinical work, research, public education via mass media, comprehension of teamwork, the way it works. Solving clinical situations in pediatric surgery arranging team work.
Verbal tests after each study course. After the completion of the study programme, the residency state exam takes place consisting of five parts:
Theoretical tutorial – 2 clinical cases (3-6 months before the end of the 5th year)
Practical tutorial – performing surgical operation (assisted by sertificated pediatric surgeon) (3-6 months before the end of the 5th year)
