Syllabus of postgraduate 2nd level professional study programme “Residency in medicine”

Goal of the programme: provide theoretical knowledge and practical skills according to regulation of pediatric speciality in Latvia; prepare doctors for certification in pediatric speciality.

Eligibility: MD degree.


Theoretical education is based on theoretical seminars and lectures. Practical education in the form of study courses according to the program; research activities.



Upon successful completion of residency doctor will have acquired knowledge that will allow to:

  • describe children’s health and disease epidemiology;

  • understand children’s somatic, social, psychological and intellectual development as well as congenital and acquired disorders and etiology, pathogenesis, pathophysiology, symptomatology of diseases;

  • take decisions on children’s health problems and disease diagnosis, differential diagnosis, therapy and prevention, children’s rehabilitation, feeding;

  • realize basics of pediatric subspecialities, and other specialties related to pediatrics.


Upon successful completion of residency doctor will have mastered the following skills:

  • to provide qualified medical assistance for children with acute and chronic diseases (is able to diagnose, perform treatment, rehabilitation and prevention in primary and secondary health care settings, as well as promote children’s health, harmonious development and defence of children’s interests);

  • to provide advice to patients, their relatives and other medical personnel within their speciality;

  • to actively participate in pediatric disease and public health prevention, education of non-certified doctors and students, as well as researches on children's health;

  • to build professional relations with patients and their carers, colleagues, taking into account cultural and ethnic peculiarities, national and global children’s rights, ethics, professional secrecy and confidentiality principles;

  • to avoid unnecessary tests, unsubstantiated treatment and child’s hospitalization;

  • to work in team, cooperate with parents and other community groups;

  • to perform manipulations described in speciality requirements.


Upon successful completion of residency certified pediatrician reaches the competences, which provides specialty-regulation and is characterized by three levels:

  • First level: knowledge corresponds to the general concept of the problem, allowing the physician to seek the necessary additional information, referring the patient to a specialist if necessary.

  • Second level: knowledge of the given problem is sufficient to understand its nature, to diagnose and, if necessary, provide emergency assistance, refer to a specialist and under his/her guidance perform diagnostics, treatment and prophylaxis.

  • Third level: knowledge enables the physician to deal with the given problem independently.

Paediatricians will be able to consult the patient and its carer, assess clinical manifestations, refer to investigations, diagnose and decide upon treatment plan, provide immediate care of emergency situations, including first aid and resuscitation, prescribe diets, drugs, fluids and blood products, carry out practical procedures,communicate effectively in a paediatric context, apply ethical and legal principles in pediatric practice, assess psychological and social aspects of patient’s disease, apply the principles, skills and knowledge of evidence-based medicine, effectively apply information and information technologies in pediatric context, apply scientific principles, methods and knowledge to pediatric practice and research, promote health at the level of the individual and the population, and work effectively in a healthcare system, be a professional (expert pediatrician, global paediatrician).


  • Residents have to master their knowledge, skills and competences during the study courses according to study program: all study courses are compulsory, the theoretical study comprises not less than 80 %, at least 48 on-call hours a month, tests on practical skills and theoretical knowledge.

  • Residency State exam:

    • theoretical test,

    • presenting the scientific, clinical or applied research in front of the committee,

    • resident submits a summary evaluation of the progress made during the study to the committee.
