Goal of the programme: to provide the theoretical knowledge and skills according to the demands of the regulations of the speciality Psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy, to set the stage for the certification in the speciality agreeably to the laws and regulations of the Republic of Latvia.

CONTENT OF THE PROGRAMME

Theoretical education is based on theoretical seminars. According to the study programme length certain number of seminars are organized. Practical education in the form of study courses according to the programme.

STUDY OUTCOMES

Extended and broadened knowledge and understanding of medicine and psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy. The knowledge will comply with requirements for speciality certification and meet high standards in the field, both scientifically and professionally. It will ensure creative thinking in clinical practice and research, as well as improve abilities for working in multidisciplinary fields. Ability to recognize and define psychic and psychosomatic disorders. Knowledge in etiopathogenesis, diagnostics, diferential diagnostics, treatment and prophylaxis of the psychic and psychosomatic disturbances and illnesses accordingly to the regulations of the specialty.

Skills that will allow to work safely, effectively, ethically and independently in clinical cases of psychic, psychosomatic disorders, illness and personality disturbances using the biopsychosocial model; to be able to perform appropriate diagnostic procedures, evaluate the psychic state, perform differential diagnosis and treatment procedures, work in different medical psychotherapy directions, crisis therapy, skills to create the therapeutical physician-patient relationship.

Competencies: knowledge, skills and attitude for clinical work, research, public education via mass media, comprehension of teamwork, the way it works, psychodynamics, crisis situations and their solving; as well as the management and supervision of the multidisciplinary team, to supervise physician and medical support personal.

Tests

Examination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills at the end of each study course by evaluating the results in 10 grade system; Residency state exam: defence of independent scientific research, report on executed work during residency and on qualification improvement activities; oral examination of the entire theoretical course.
