Goal of the programme: to provide an opportunity to acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills according to requirements of statutes of diagnostic radiology speciality, to prepare a medical doctor for obtaining a certificate in the speciality of Diagnostic Radiology, in compliance with the laws and regulations of Republic of Latvia.

CONTENT OF THE PROGRAMME

The programme is elaborated on the basis of UEMS (Union Europèenne Des Medicins Specialistes) Section of Radiology, the UEMS European Board paper “European training charter for clinical radiology” recommendations, as well as supplements for these guidelines and recommendations created by EAR (European Association of Radiology) [2011].

The program contains basic studies of general radiology and subspecialties of diagnostic radiology, including basics of general radiology and conventional diagnostic radiology, chest, breast and cardiovascular system radiology weeks, gastrointestinal and abdominal radiology, musculoskeletal radiology, urogenital radiology, pediatric radiology, head and neck radiology, neuroradiology, and interventional radiology.

Studies involve acquisition of theoretical knowledge in lectures, seminars, as well as development of practical skills through rotations in disciplines mentioned above.

The first year of residency studies is dedicated to acquirement of basic knowledge. It contains lecture courses and seminars, followed by theoretical examination – test of multiple choice questions, practical studies in conventional radiology followed by practical examination. Course of theoretic lectures and seminars contains physical background of radiological imaging, quality control, radiation protection, physics of radiation, radiobiology, use of contrast media, and imaging basics of organs and organ systems, including, skeleton, skull, pulmonary system, gastrointestinal tract, abdominal organs (biliary system, urogenital system), cardiovascular system, breast, intracranial space and brain, spinal canal and medulla, as well as general basics of interventional radiology.

Second, third and fourth year of training involves study courses in specialties, mentioned above. Studies include acquisition of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in use of modern methods of diagnostic imaging, including CT. MR, US, DSA and others, testing of theoretical knowledge in written and oral form at the end of each study course, and thematic seminars through the whole period of studies. Each year residents work on independent clinically orientated scientific research study, defending the completed work during the session of Committee at the end of each study year. Residents participate in the education process of pre- graduate medical students by conducting practical classes in general radiology, attend problem lectures. During the study residents regularly attend meetings, educational courses and seminars organized by Latvian Association of Radiology, Latvian Association of Neuroradiology, Latvian Association of Musculoskeletal Radiology, Latvian Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Radiology, as well as post graduate training courses organized by European School of Radiology and international exchange programs for fellowships.

STUDY OUTCOMES

Knowledge

After successful completion of the course residents will acquire the knowledge that will allow to independently perform radiological examinations, identify, assess, critically analyze and correctly interpret the pathological radiological signs of various organs.

Practical skills

After study course residents will be able to shortly, accurate, independent, professionally formulate and describe the results; clearly, concisely and comprehensively define the conclusions, integrating them with clinical data.

Competency

As a result of studies resident should gain such level of knowledge to be capable of working independently in a general or community hospital or in general radiology practice.

Tests

In the first year of training – written multi-choice test of theoretical knowledge and practical examination in conventional radiology are conducted. In the second, third and fourth years of training – written and oral examinations at the end of each study course, and defending thesis of original scientific clinically orientated research are required. Residency state exam at the end of the programme.
