Goal of the programme: to ensure the acquisition and improvement of theoretical knowledge and practical skills according to the requirements of thoracic surgery residency regulations; to prepare the doctor for certification in the speciality of thoracic surgery in compliance with the normative documents of the Republic of Latvia.

Theoretical education is based on theoretical seminars. According to the study programme length, a certain number of seminars are organized. Practical education in the form of study courses according to the programme.


Knowledge and understanding about anatomy and patophysiology of lungs, pleura, bronchial system, esophagus and thoracic wall, etiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs and diagnostic methods of acute surgical diseases of thoracic cavity and indications for conservative and surgical treatment, diagnostic methods, surgical instruments used in thoracic surgery, leading issues in scientific or professional area of particular specialty that provides base for creative thinking or investigation including work in different fields.

Skills to provide emergency surgical treatment for patients having thoracic pathology, to create correct diagnostic scheme and treatment algorithm for patients with thoracic pathology, to realize possible postoperative complications, their prevention and treatment, to use practical skills in diagnostic and therapeutic manipulations.


Highly qualified specialist who is competent to work at national health institutions and provide specialized medical care according to the Cabinet of Ministers and Ministry of Health and medical associations of Latvia in following specialties – thoracic surgery, pulmonology, traumatology, vascular surgery, neurology, gerontology, oncology. The specialist ir able to interpret rentgenological images, CT semiotics of thoracic organs, perform pleural puncture and thoracostomy, conventional and video assisted thoracotomy, stitch lung independently. The specialist is competent to treat strained and spontaneous pneumothorax, haemothorax and pleuritis, carry out therapeutic and diagnostic tactics in case of pulmonal bleeding, has knowledge and skills of patient treatment and caring after operations on thoracic organs (lungs, esophagus, diaphragm, mediastinum). The specialist ir able to perform following operations – lung resection, plastics of diaphragm, esophageal diverticulum resection, resection of ribs.


After the fifth year of studies the resident takes the Residency state examination in relation to his/her practical activities during the studies (multiple choice test with 540 questions and papers with 2 theoretical questions in each). Testing practical skills/manipulations: presentation of scientific, clinical or applied and previously written and handed in research in front of examination committee, submission of summary of accomplished manipulations during the studies (assisted or self-dependent operations) and confirmations about the attendance of seminars and conferences. Characterization from the head of the residency program has to be handed in.
