Syllabus of postgraduate 2nd level professional study programme “Residency in medicine”

Goal of the programme: to perform the postgraduate theoretical and practical acquirement and improvement of skills to qualify doctors to be practitioners in transplantology according to the requirements of regulations in the Republic of Latvia.

Eligibility: MD degree and certification in surgery, paediatric surgery or urology.

CONTENT OF THE PROGRAMME

Theoretical knowledge on etiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestation, diagnosis, differential diagnosis of abdominal organ diseases leading to terminal insufficiency and necessity for replacement therapy; organ donor identification, management and legitimacy of consent for donor process, donor organ retrieval from deceased and living donors, abdominal organ transplantation, management of posttransplant period. Practical skills in diagnostic procedures, techniques and instrumentation used in transplant surgery. During the study resident performs duties in donorteam and in transplantation center (under the control of certified transplantologist); manages pedagogical and reasearch work.

STUDY OUTCOMES

Knowledge of etiology, pathogenesis, symptoms, diagnostics of abdominal organ diseases causing terminal insufficiency and necessity for replacement therapy, indications for replacement therapy and transplantation; the process of donor organ procurement and management, indications for donor organ retrieval; methods of diagnostics and instrumental sets being used in transplant surgery.

Skills in donor organ retrieval from deceased and living donors; providing transplantological care for patients suffering from terminal insufficiency of abdominal organs; nomination of a correct scheme of diagnostics and treatment tactics for patient suffering from transplant pathology; diagnostic and curative manipulations and operations.

Competencies in providing transplantological assistance according to requirements of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia, Ministry of Health and the Transplantological Association.

Tests

Knowledge tests after each study course and evaluation of residents’ log book; presentation of scientific work; theoretical examination (computerized test) during the Residency state exam at the end of the programme.
