Syllabus of postgraduate 2nd level professional study programme “Residency in medicine”

Goal of the programme: to perform the postgraduate theoretical and practical acquirement and improvement of skills to qualify doctors to be practitioners in general surgery according to the requirements of regulation, in compliance with the normative documentations of the Republic of Latvia.

CONTENT OF THE PROGRAMME

Theoretical education is based on theoretical seminars (3 seminars per month or 33 seminars per year). According to the study programme length in different disciplines, a certain number of seminars are organized. Practical education according to the plan of study courses.

STUDY OUTCOMES

Knowledge: etiology, pathogenesis, symptomatology, diagnostics of urological diseases and indications for conservative and surgical treatment; awareness of the most commonly used diagnostic methods and tools.

Skills: to provide urgent assistance to the patient with acute urological abnormalities, create and implement a proper diagnostic systems and treatment tactics in a patient with urologic pathology, for diagnostic and therapeutic manipulation.

Competency: to provide assistance in accordance with the Latvian Cabinet of Ministers, Ministry of Health and the Association of Latvian Urologists. Certified specialist is able to demonstrate a competence in urological pathology diagnostics, conservative and operative treatment.

Tests

Inspection of theoretical and practical knowledge is done at the end of each study course. At the end of the fifth study year – Residency state exam should be passed, including a multichoice theoretical exam, a test of the practical skills and a presentation of scientific research work.
