Nursing 3The Faculty of Public Health and Social Welfare of Rīga Stradiņš University was established on 20 May 2014 on the grounds of the decision taken by RSU Senate by merging the Faculty of Nursing, the Faculty of Public Health, the Department of Social Work of the Faculty of Rehabilitation and the Department of Sports, Nutrition and Pedagogy. By the decision of RSU Senate of 28 June 2016, RSU Liepāja Branch was subordinated to the Faculty of Public Health and Social Welfare.

The Faculty of Public Health and Social Welfare operates on the basis of ensuring and developing multidisciplinary education and research in the fields of health care, public health and social welfare grounded on biopsychosocial and holistic approach at group and individual level.

Its idea is grounded on the definition of health by the World Health Organization: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. Public health is an ancient field of science. Its beginnings goes back to the Ancient Greece , as back then people started seeking for ways to be healthier and live longer. Today we face rapid urbanisation, population ageing, environmental pollution and threats to ecology, thus, greater focus should be laid on various activities oriented towards the promotion of health and social wellbeing. The Faculty of Public Health and Social Welfare is the only faculty in Latvia offering a wide range of unique Bachelor’s and Master’s study programmes. The faculty trains various professionals – nurses, midwifes, nutrition and health sports specialists, as well as professionals in the fields of health psychology, supervision, public health, and social work. We are proud to offer our students quality interdisciplinary education by training future innovators and leaders in the field of public health and social welfare.

Besides theoretical knowledge, our students are privileged to shape their professional skills at RSU Medical Education and Technology Centre by resolving high-risk situations and tasks in the simulated safe environment until the moment they feel secure and ready for practical work in hospitals. Our students are also welcome to develop their practical skills in health promotion at our fitness hall (for health sports specialists) and well-equipped kitchen classroom for nutrition specialists.

The Faculty of Public Health and Social Welfare of Rīga Stradiņš University offers forward-looking education with respect for traditions and an opportunity to acquire knowledge, skills and competence for meeting the needs of tomorrow’s patients by ensuring solid grounds for professional growth.

The faculty includes five departments, which represent the following major areas of study:

Public Health and Epidemiology, which enables students to gain knowledge and skills for effective practice in public health care organisations and institutions by applying latest scientific achievements to the solution of not only current public health problems, but ones that may affect our society in the future as well.

Nursing and Midwifery, which ensures a comprehensive training to become a qualified nurse or midwife, who would be skilled and able to provide patients and their family members with the latest health care practices. This includes organising, coordinating and leading patient care at all health care levels. Additional emphasis is put on developing critical thinking skills through research.

Sports and Nutrition assists students to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Throughout the studies students gain an appreciation of the benefits of a healthy diet and workout. As a medical university, we put particular emphasis on the importance of proper workout and diet for healthy individuals as well as those who have decided to change their lifestyle due to a serious illness.

Health Psychology and Pedagogy, which places an emphasis on the importance of psychology and pedagogy, when trying to facilitate a healthy lifestyle of a patient as well as their emotional and social wellbeing. Students are encouraged to understand the regularities between pedagogy and life opportunities as well as their emotional wellbeing and various illnesses. Throughout the studies students learn how to help patients resolve the emotional causes of diseases with the help of GPs and other experts, thus reducing their impact on the patient’s quality of life.

Welfare and Social Work provides students with a comprehensive training in social welfare practices both when working with grown-ups or children and young people in a variety of organisational settings – from governmental to nongovernmental institutions and agencies. Students are encouraged to explore the latest research to understand how to help those in need of social services. Covered topics include youth work, human rights, social planning and social work.

Throughout the study process, students experience a variety of teaching approaches, including lectures, classes, seminars, and tutorials, which are integrated in the electronic learning system (online activities and video-linked virtual classes). The method of teaching may vary from department to department, but thanks to the professionalism and great practical experience of our teaching staff, the studies are also integrated with leading inpatient and outpatient clinics, GP practices and care centres in Latvia. Students can also carry out their placement in regional medical institutions throughout Latvia.

We offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes both in Latvian and in English.
