Financial year 2011 turned positive for Rīga Stradiņš University – total budget increased by 4.6% reaching 24.8 million lats mainly due to the successful attraction of the EU structural fund financing and increase of the number of students paying for their studies.

13 April: Experts of Council of Higher Education came up with an official announcement on the highest evaluation of RSU medicine and healthcare study direction “Health care” which includes 26 the most strategically significant and the largest medicine and healthcare study programmes. Besides, several Bachelor’s and Master’s study programmes in social sciences were acknowledged as sustainable, which is considered to be the highest possible evaluation.

21 April: Second year in a row RSU/Runway female floor ball team became Latvian champions.

3 May: RSU mixed choir led by Evita Taranda and Zane Zilberte took the first place in 10th International Choir Festival Venezia in Musica, Italy. The choir also received the title of laureate in folklore category and special prize for the best rendering of modern musical composition.

19 June: The newly elected RSU Convent of Councillors gathered for the first meeting. The following members of the convent participated in the meeting: Dins Šmits, Chairman, Head of GlaxoSmithKline Latvia; Anda Cakša, Chair of the Board of Children's Clinical University Hospital; Ivars Kalviņš, Director of Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis; Boris Teterev, Maecenas; Ģirts Rungainis, finance and investment expert; Jan Frederik Eriksen (Norway), representative of parents of international students; Ilmārs Rimšēvics, president of the Bank of Latvia; Jānis Stradiņš, academician, Chairman of the Senate of Latvian Academy of Sciences; Gunārs Kūtris, President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Latvia.

18 July: Third year in a row RSU made an announcement on the record number of applicants for undergraduate studies, which increased by 54.7% compared to year 2011. The toughest competition was detected in the study programme “Dentistry” – more than 13.9 applicants for a state financed study place. In total, the number of international students increased by 11% reaching 760 students.

22 July: RSU won the procurement within the framework of European Social Fund project on laboratory animals “Possibilities of Neuroimmune Regulation in Treatment of Neurodegenerative Diseases with New Type of Privileged Structures”. The results of the research will be reflected in internationally quoted and local scientific journals, conferences, congresses, as well as oral reports.

4 August: Jānis Leitis, track and field athlete, RSU graduate, participated in the Summer Olympics in London.

4 October: The ceremonial opening of the renovated Block A in RSU main building (pictured below), 16 Dzirciema Street, on seven floors with laboratories and lecture rooms with the total area of 4351 square meters. The total of 1,236,266.41 LVL (exclusive of VAT) of EU funding were allocated for the renovation of the building.


28 November: During the RSU Constitutional Assembly meeting Professor Jānis Gardovskis was re-elected rector of RSU for a five year term. Professor Jānis Vētra was the other candidate for this position. RSU rector is elected by Constitutional Assembly of the university consisting of 130 university representatives, among them 26 students.


20 December: Construction works completed at the innovative RSU Medical Education Technology Centre at 26a Anniņmuižas Boulevard (pictured). Ingrīda Circene, Minister for Health, RSU staff and other guests were among the first to visit new RSU building. The total area of the building is 7776.8 square meters, while more than 2.5 million lats were allocated for the renovation of the building.
