On Friday, 2 September, the recently renovated library premises – Open Access Loan – were opened at Rīga Stradiņš University (16 Dzirciema Street, Block G, Room 101). RSU is among the first universities in Latvia to offer open access to the entire textbook stock for students.
The spacious premises (occupying more than 420 m2) with total cost of renovation amounting in 326,000 EUR were opened by RSU Rector Prof. Jānis Gardovskis, the Minister of Health Anda Čakša and RSU Library Director Ināra Aploka.
RSU Rector Prof. Jānis Gardovskis: “RSU Library renovation fits into RSU long-term strategy that includes the development of both study programmes and research infrastructure. RSU is a student-centred university, and students’ needs are top priority for us while developing the library infrastructure. Opportunities provided by Open Access Loan, high-end technologies and up-to-date approach to work organisation within the library will make library services more convenient and save students’ time.”
“RSU is among the first universities in Latvia to offer open access to the entire textbook stock for students,” stresses RSU Library Director Ināra Aploka. “We have tagged all textbooks with RFID (radio-frequency identification) labels, thus, now students have an opportunity to borrow, check-out and renew books and view user account by using self-service machines. This is a good solution for safety reasons and it facilitates access to books.”
Open Access Loan was established by merging two user service points – Scientific Literature Loan and Textbook Loan. In addition to self-service equipment, several novelties were introduced – longer opening hours, a room for team work, rooms for individual work with own PC or library computers. Library users may reserve items by logging to the Electronic Union Catalogue of Latvian libraries of national significance by using library self-service kiosks or any computer inside or outside the library.
