From 23rd to 25th of November, 2016 Riga Stradiņš University (RSU) will host the 6th international interdisciplinary scientific conference Society. Health. Welfare with this year’s theme Living in the World of Diversity. Social Transformations, Innovations, Solutions.
The annual conference which is organised by RSU, Faculty of Public Health and Social Welfare has become not only a major event for the university’s scientific and research community, but has also turned into a locally and internationally recognized forum for researchers, experts, academic staff and practitioners from the areas of humanities, social sciences and medicine to meet. Sociologists, healthcare specialists, social workers, policy and public relations specialists, lawyers, philosophers and educational specialists from 23 countries: Latvia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom and the United States of America, and will share their experiences, innovative ideas and outcomes of their research activity.
The first interdisciplinary scientific conference was held in 2007 and, at its opening event, the president of Latvia of that time Mr Valdis Zatlers, having highlighted the importance of international forums and wishing the conference long and sustainable life, wrote in his welcoming address: “I have said it before and would like to emphasize once again that public health and welfare are interconnected and mutually supplementing fields. Therefore effective solution of complex theoretical and practical issues requires amalgamation of the true needs of scientific areas with the values of theoretical and scientific findings”.
Each of the conferences has been devoted to a particular topic, so for example, the leading-motive of the 2nd conference was Sustainable Development of a Safe Society Of Equal – Opportunities, the 3rd conference was targeted at Social Capacity Building for Poverty Alleviation and Decreasing Vulnerability: Reality, Challenge and Responsibility, the 4th conference was devoted to the year for solidarity between generations: Intergenerational Solidarity: Problems and Solutions, Reality and Perspectives, trying to answer the following questions: „Is the generation gap a myth or it is reality? What is our attitude to aging; what can be given by one generation to another? How to retain and strengthen solidarity between generations in an ageing society? The 5th conference, in its turn, was a platform for discussing family welfare issues.
The conference has strengthened international contacts and cooperation as regards the mobility of academic staff and students, by also fostering cooperation in the area of research, improvement of study quality and development of new study programmes.
