Currently there are 352 Swedish students at RSU, out of which 302 study medicine and 50 are enrolled in the dentistry study programme. Swedish students are the second largest foreign students’ group at RSU (outnumbered only by Germans).

Henrik Landerholm is the Swedish Ambassador to Latvia since 2013. From 1991 till 2002 he was a member of the Swedish parliament (Riksdag) where he chaired the committee for defence. Following work in the parliament, H. Landerholm held president’s office at Swedish Defence University and served as Director-General of the Folke Bernadotte Academy – the Swedish Agency for Peace, Security and Development under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Before coming to Latvia, H. Landerholm was leading the Swedish joint civil and military effort in Afghanistan for two years. He has graduated Armored Corps Officers College and the Military Academy and has been a Fulbright Scholar at American Studies Institute, University of Delaware, USA. In 2008 H. Landerholm was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the Swedish Army Reserve.

The meeting with the Swedish Ambassador Henrik Landerholm was this year’s closing visit within the framework of the programme Meet the Ambassador launched this spring by RSU International Department. Within the given initiative, RSU has already hosted visits of the Ambassador of Germany to Latvia Rolf Schütte, the Ambassador of Italy Sebastiano Fulci and the Finnish Ambassador Olli Kantanen. It is planned to continue this programme also next year.

The director of International Department Baiba Pētersone admits: “this is a good opportunity for RSU foreign students to meet the diplomatic representatives of their home country for an informal discussion. Students take a particular interest in the cooperation between their home country and Latvia, life of their diaspora in Riga and are looking forward to such meetings, thinking in advance on questions to be asked. Ambassadors and other members of diplomatic staff welcome such meetings with RSU students. It is always a pleasure to receive from ambassadors’ feedback on students’ satisfaction with their studies at RSU.”
