A large scale renovation project has completed at Rīga Stradiņš University – within a period of almost three months, Block A, one of the most significant blocks of the central building stretching out for 4351 sq. m, has been reconstructed. With the aid of the European Regional Development Fund, the sum of 1,236,266.41 LVL has been invested in the renovation works. The seven storeys of the block houses several laboratory and lecture rooms. The rooms are important for study process as the study courses in medicine and healthcare are acquired there by Latvian and international students.

In the presence of Ingrīda Circene, Minister for Health, on October 4 the opening ceremony of the newly renovated buildings took place. Rooms of the Block A had not been renovated since construction in 1987. Thus, it has taken 25 years since the construction of the building till its renovation in summer 2012.

In cooperation with the State Education Development Agency and constructors, by efficiently using ERDF funding, within the period of three months, 39 laboratory rooms, 16 study rooms and 28 staff rooms have been renovated. On a daily basis, several tenths of academic staff members as well as several hundreds of students are using the premises of Block A.

During the renovation works, the whole infrastructure of the block has been changed, including windows. Moreover, three elevators have been replaced, and a laboratory ventilation room has been constructed anew. Alongside the reconstruction works, the furniture necessary for studies of value amounting to nearly 60 thousand LVL has been acquired. Moreover, new computer cables of a total length of 27 kilometres and electricity cables of a total length of 25 kilometres have been arranged. Additionally, 173 doors, heating and ventilation pipes of a total length of 3 kilometres have been changed, linoleum of 3290 square metres has been decked and 439 computer connections have been established. A total of 116 tons of plaster, 2 tons of paint and 4 tons of tile adhesive have been used for the interior decoration. As a result, the new premises have become significantly lighter, warmer and cosier. Besides that, modern computer solutions and several interactive boards will now be more widely available for study purposes.

Renovation works of RSU Block A have been accomplished within the framework of ERDF project “The modernisation of the infrastructure of Rīga Stradiņš University for the improvement of the quality of the health care and environmental sciences study programme implementation”, Agreement No. 2010/0097/3DP/3.1.2.1.1/09/IPIA/VIAA/024.
