darba-drosiba-konf-leadOn 6 & 7 December 2012, Rīga will be hosting an International Conference on Occupational Health and Safety, "From Policies to Practice", organised by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Environmental Health of Rīga Stradiņš University.

In 2001, a new Law on Occupational Health and Safety was adopted in Latvia together with a whole set of new legal requirements in the area of occupational health and safety thus setting the new background for workers’ health and safety. A new development strategy has been adopted during that period and a few institutional changes have taken place. Neighbouring countries, Lithuania and Estonia, have also had similar changes with new legal frameworks established around 10 years ago, not to mention more global changes around the Baltic Sea and in other EU countries in terms of OH&S policies and economy.

During that time, the new EU policies on OH&S as well as several other policies for health and safety of workers have grown “old”. In light of the recent efforts to provide new policy tools to improve health and safety of working population and to mainstream it into the approach of healthy lifestyles in healthy working conditions, it is worth to take the time and pause for a while.

The aim of the conference is to look back whether the changing policies have brought changes in workers’ health and safety or in other words – have they been put into practice – and not only in Latvia and other countries around the Baltic Sea but all around the world?
