On 28 November, during the meeting of the Constitutional Assembly, RSU rector’s elections were held. Upon participation of 122 members of the Constitutional Assembly, Professor Jānis Gardovskis was re-elected rector of RSU.
During the meeting of the Constitutional Assembly, 122 voting cards were distributed, 121 of them were admitted as valid upon the opening of the ballot-boxes. Professor Jānis Gardovskis received 70 votes, while 51 members of the Constitutional Assembly voted in favour of professor Jānis Vētra.
RSU rector’s elections are held every five years. RSU rector is elected by the RSU Constitutional Assembly consisting of 130 university members, among them 26 students. The candidate receiving more than half of the total votes wins the elections. In accordance to Section 17 of the Law on Institutions of Higher Education, the rector shall be approved by the Cabinet of Ministers. Rector shall start to perform his duties after the approval by the Cabinet of Ministers.
