The Ambassador of the United States to Latvia, H. E. Mark Pekala, will be visiting Rīga Stradiņš University on Thursday, 18 April. During his visit, at 12:30, the Ambassador will give a public lecture on Transatlantic relations after economic recession (venue: Hippocrates lecture-theatre), which everyone is welcome to attend. The lecture is organized in collaboration between RSU, the US Embassy and the Latvian Institute of Foreign Affairs.
In his lecture, Ambassador Pekala will be explaining the connection between the foreign policy of the US and the economic growth and development of the EU, trade conditions, and the current economic relations between the US and Latvia. At the end of the lecture, there will be a discussion led by journalist and RSU asst. professor Edijs Bošs (Faculty of European Studies), during which the attendees will be able to ask their questions to the Ambassador.
Prior to the lecture, Ambassador Pekala will be meeting with the University’s management to discuss RSU’s plans of expanding further its operations on the international scale.
The United States and Latvia have been cooperating closely in many areas, including education, since 28 July 1922, when the US Government recognized the Republic of Latvia de iure and diplomatic relations were established between the two countries. On 29 March 2012, the United States Senate confirmed Mark Pekala as US Ambassador to the Republic of Latvia, and on July 10, 2012, he was sworn in. He is the eighth US ambassador to Latvia.
