Last month, the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry awarded the country’s best exporters. Rīga Stradiņš University was among the award winning organisations this year, gaining recognition for its experience in export.
“Teamwork has been the decisive factor in the increase of international students at RSU – in the last five years the number has gone up in excess of ten times. The contribution our international students have made to the Latvian economy in that period is EUR 150 million with the annual average of 30 million. Having said that, I perceive this award as an impulse for new challenges rather than something which marks the end of the road or something we have accomplished. Yes, we know we can do better,” said Rector of RSU professor Jānis Gardovskis at the awards ceremony.
It has been over 20 years since RSU enrolled its first foreign students. There are currently students from 32 countries and four continents studying at RSU – Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Spain, Ireland, the United States, Hong Kong, Canada, Israel, Sri Lanka, Georgia, Russia, Kazakhstan, the Ukraine, etc.
As a result of the Winter 2014 enrolment, a further 170 international students commenced their studies here in February, setting a record-high mark of 16 % of all students at RSU. With the total number of international students at 1,100, RSU is the leader among Baltic universities. The majority of RSU international students are studying medicine or dentistry; in addition to that, there are also tens of incoming exchange students from other European universities.
