From the autumn semester of the next academic year, Latvian students will be joining international medical student groups of Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) at later stages of studies by fostering congeniality among local and international students.

As dean of RSU Faculty of Medicine Professor Guntis Bahs claims: "Our faculty aims at ensuring up-to-date and friendly study environment, therefore we strive for reducing the gap between local and international students, as they all are students of our university. Thus, international groups will be formed by offering local students the opportunity to join these groups.”

Due to the fact that solely the best medical students will be offered the opportunity to join the international groups, they will be selected by taking into account the students' academic performance for the past three semesters, English language proficiency and engagement in public activities.

Two international groups are planned for the 4th year of studies, whereas one international group will be planned for the 5th and 6th years each.

Professor Guntis Bahs stresses that "upon interacting with local students it will be easier for our international students to acquire Latvian language, and thus it will facilitate their communication with patients in Rīga’s hospitals. Besides, they will be able to get acquainted with Latvia and local traditions and culture.”

This new opportunity contributes to the development of internationalisation of the university, international integration and promotion of student-friendly environment.
