On 26 May at 15:00, in an open meeting of the Medical Promotion Council of Rīga Stradiņš University (Hippocrates lecture theatre, 16 Dzirciema Street, Rīga), Ms Laura Neimane will defend her doctoral thesis Morphoradiological Evaluation of Maxillary Alveolar Bone in Patients with Dental Implants.
After the loss of tooth atrophy of maxillary alveolar bone occurs. Bone volume decreases also due to pneumatisation (the increase of maxillary sinus as a result of internal air pressure) of maxillary sinus. Thus, bone support that is required for successful placing of implants decreases. To ensure the stability of implants in atrophic maxillary alveolar bone surgical procedure with an aim to lift the base of maxillary sinus by using bone replacement biomaterials of various origins is performed. The long term impact of various bone replacement biomaterials on maxillary bone and sinus has been evaluated using cone beam computed tomography. Thus, radiologically detectable changes in maxillary sinus before and after the surgery are determined. Besides, change of sinus volume, changes in maxillary alveolar bone after the use of biomaterials, as well as changes in the place of the sinus base lift are also detected.
