internets-introThe name for Rīga Stradins University Students Portal 'Universum' was selected by the final vote in the contest in January. The author of the name is Alina Kuzņecova, 4th year student of the Faculty of Medicine.

The author explains the choice of this name: "This word contains letters RSU; it means 'everything' in Latin, and it also resembles the word 'university'".

During the final vote, universum won by gaining a majority by 111 votes, while veRSUs was ranked second and URSUS third.

After the first stage of the contest, the commission consisting of the representatives of various Rīga Stradins University (RSU) structural units, was presented with 10 names: URSUS, uRSUla, veRSUs, myrsu (mansrsu), UNIVERSUM, IRIS, citramons, puRSUit, aRSUm and iRSUs. Three of them were promoted for participation in the contest final.

The contest about the portal name was announced on 23 October 2014. Students could submit their proposals over a period of three weeks. 36 names were suggested by 34 contest participants. Some students came up with several ideas. Interestingly enough, the name URSUS was suggested by four students.

Student Portal is a web-site created by RSU a few years ago to provide a platform for the exchange of information between the university and its students. In summer 2014, the IT Department started active work intending to develop the Student Portal. The aim of the planned improvements is to make this portal a site where students can get all necessary information (lecture schedules, changes, examination grades, current events at the university, etc.).
