In the last week of January RSU hosted the Orientation Week for the newly enrolled international students. This admission is remarkable for RSU as the biggest amongst all winter semester intakes in terms of candidate applications received (451).

This winter RSU saw the enrolment of 215 full time students, 199 of them were admitted to the study programme “Medicine”, whereas 16 students chose to study dentistry. The enrolled students represent 20 different countries with the majority coming from Germany, Sweden and other countries of the European Union; however, it should be noted that such remote countries as New Zealand and Singapore are represented as well.

In line with full time students, 30 students from various RSU partner universities from Germany, Spain, Portugal, France, the Netherlands and other countries commenced their studies or placement within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme. These students acquire healthcare study courses (medicine, social work, physiotherapy) as well as courses of social sciences (law, communication science and political science).

The Orientation Week programme offered practical advice about starting their life in Riga and studies at RSU. To foster the integration of international students in RSU and Latvia, the enrolled students were introduced to RSU, peculiarities of the study process, Latvian culture etc. Students also went on a field trip to Rundāle Castle and participated in social events organised by International Student Association that offered fun and informal opportunities to meet other students.

To help international students settle into student life in Rīga, an Info Fair was held for the first time. Various RSU student organisations and interest groups as well as companies providing various services for students took part in the fair. Participants of the fair and international students alike appreciated this innovation.

The Orientation Week is organised by the International Department in cooperation with the International Student Department, Student Services, International Student Association and Student Council. The first Orientation Week for international students took place in August 2009.
