The Faculty of Law of Rīga Stradiņš University in collaboration with the College of Law, the University Nord in Tallinn, and the Institute for Security and Development Policy, Sweden, are organising the international conference "New Challenges of Today's Society in Strengthening Security: State of Play and Future Perspectives", which will take place on 20 April 2016.

The subject of the conference is topical, since the issues related to strengthening of security have become highly important in the current situation of increasing illegal immigration, extended terrorism threats and growing social tension. The risks of extremism and radicalism keep increasing.

At the same time, law enforcement bodies and other institutions responsible for public order and the prevention of offences and crimes have insufficient resources. Due to the current situation, the urgency of the strengthening of security becomes increasingly more apparent also in the society. The awareness of the security situation is becoming particularly important in the light of the swiftly growing number of refugees and migrants in Europe and higher terrorism and criminality threats.

In the conference, it is intended to pay special attention to the following scope of issues:

  • new types of threats and new challenges in the prevention thereof;

  • new approaches to legislative policy for the strengthening of security in the current situation;

  • specific investigative acts and operational measures for the identification, prevention, neutralisation and detection of risks;

  • directions for operational optimisation of law enforcement bodies and special services in the current situation.

At this conference, the above-mentioned and other issues will be considered, reviewed and analysed with an intent to seek for solutions.

The conference will involve the participation of Estonian, Lithuanian, Polish, Ukrainian, Swedish and Latvian specialists and experts in security and crime prevention/ combating. Working languages: Latvian, English, Russian.

Venue of the conference: Riga Stradiņš University, Hippocrates Hall (Hipokrāta auditorija), 16 Dzirciema Street, Rīga.

Time: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
