On the occasion of the World Health Day, 7 April, RSU will be hosting a blood drive for the first time. Local and international RSU students alike are encouraged to donate their blood in RSU main building, Block B, Rooms 202 and 203, any time between 11:00 and 16:00.
According to the State Blood Donor Centre, the number of blood donors per day should reach 150 to help all those in need. Each donation has the potential of saving as many as three lives, as the blood is separated into several components and transfused to patients having different conditions. Patients with severe burns require up to 65 donors, whereas a polytrauma victim who has suffered in a traffic accident might need 25 donors. Blood donated by around 5 donors should be administered for patients undergoing abdominal and hip replacement surgery, while blood cancer patients require the amount of blood donated by 1 to 3 donors a day.
You can donate blood if you are healthy, aged between 18 and 65 and your weight is in excess of 50 kg. Before donation follow these recommendations: have a rest and good night’s sleep, drink non-alcoholic fluids, eat healthy meal for breakfast and avoid using alcohol on a day before your donation. Only 450 ml of blood is collected during a donation, and the donation does not have any side effects for a healthy individual.
Please, have an identity document (passport, ID card) and bank account number with you. Foreign citizens may donate if they have been granted a personal ID number in Latvia. After donating blood, the donor will receive a breakfast bag and compensation for lunch transferred to the donor’s bank account. Still, the best reward is the satisfaction of helping to save a life.
Please note that only a healthy person might donate blood. Therefore, on 7 April, students from RSU Faculty of Medicine will be there for you in the lobby of RSU main building to give practical advice and consultations on the following aspects:
Ear care tips and earwax diagnosis;
Blood pressure and tips for cardiovascular health;
Oncological diseases and blood sugar test;
Eye test for distance vision and colour blindness test;
Physical workload test and physical activities for health.
