Rīga and Latvia, in general, are fairly safe, although accidents can happen here and there.
Violent street crime is relatively rare and most security problems are associated with petty theft, such as pick pocketing, which is a problem in certain areas of the Riga centre.
Students enjoy parties and partying in the Old Town, but you have to bear responsibility for your own actions. Therefore we suggest that you consider a few pieces of advice:
Take care of your personal belongings! Do not leave your personal belongings unattended, especially on public transport!
Avoid crowded places, or if you happen to be in one, pay attention to your bag and pockets!
Avoid the area around the Central market and be careful in the underground pathways around the Central Station!
Avoid unlit streets late at night.
There are no districts in Rīga that are particularly dangerous or violent. City centre and most other suburbs and districts are safe, however, certain areas in the Latgale Suburb (Latgales priekšpilsēta, Southeastern part of Rīga) are somewhat underdeveloped and socially disadvantaged.
In terms of public transport, trolley No. 15 that has a route through the Latgale Suburb is infamous for pickpocketing.
Should the need arise, please contact the police (“Policija”) by dialling either 112 or 02.
