Liepajas-filiale13Rīga Stradiņš University established its branch in Liepāja by incorporating the former Medical College of that town, the only educational establishment of the kind in West Latvia.

The Liepāja branch currently offers three first level higher education programmes: Nursing, Physician Assistance and Midwifery. The total duration of studies in those programmes is 3 years (120 CP / 180 ECTS). The length of an academic year is 40 weeks.  

There are 200 students on the average at RSU’s Liepāja branch.

The study process is split as follows:

Theoretical knowledge and practical skills 50%
Independent work 50%
Total: 4800 (120 CP)

 

The students acquire the basics of medicine during the first study year (anatomy, physiology, pharmacology etc.). During the second year the students acquire knowledge of diseases and care, and the third year is directed towards healthcare and the elaboration of the Qualification Paper.

For practical training, the major sites are the Regional Hospital of Liepāja, the Oncological Hospital, Social Care units and Emergency Service, the Regional Hospital of North Courland, and Kuldīga Hospital LLC.

Study Programmes

Physician Assistant / MEDICAL TREATMENT

Qualification: First level professional higher education
Length of studies: 3 years (6 semesters) / 120 CP (180 ECTS)
Language: Latvian
Accreditation: Accredited for a full accreditation period of 6 years

Study objectives

  • Acquire first level higher professional Physician Assistant education and fourth level professional qualification
  • Encourage formation of independent, creative, professional personality that would be able to provide emergency medical assistance to the victims in life-threatening, critical condition at pre-hospital stage and in hospital reception wards
  • Provide the opportunity to prepare for continuation of education, in order to acquire the second level professional higher education and fifth level professional qualification
  • Ensure the educational quality and development in accordance with the labour market that would encourage the improvement of health care system

Description of curriculum

  • In the first academic year, the student acquires and deepens his / her knowledge of human anatomy and physiology emphasizing the female, environment and its influence on the human’s health, basics of the interpersonal communication, basic concepts of sociology, pharmacology, acquires skills of emergency assistance. In the course, the student undergoes clinical nursing placement at municipal and regional emergency assistance units under the supervision of professional placement managers
  • In the second academic year, the student acquires practical and theoretical knowledge at work with patients of various profiles. Learns to acquire information about health status of the patient, to document it and to reasonably defend it
  • In the third academic year, the student acquires more profound knowledge and skills to operate in extreme situations
  • The student elaborates research qualification work, in which he / she reveals his / her theoretical and practical knowledge in the clinical subjects and passes Qualification examination consisting of verification of his / her theoretical knowledge and practical skills
  • Upon completion of the curriculum, the college-leaver is entitled to work at any health care establishment in Latvia, in emergency care units, in the National Armed Forces as well as health care establishments in the European Community. They are entitled to continue their education in post-diploma educational programmes and at higher education establishments

Midwife / MEDICAL TREATMENT

Qualification: First level professional higher education
Length of studies: 3 years (6 semesters) / 120 CP (180 ECTS)
Language: Latvian
Accreditation: Accredited for a full accreditation period of 6 years


Study objectives

  • Acquirement of midwifery education and development of relevant competence that would ensure preparation of competent and professional staff, thus encouraging improvement of national programme of the public health care and encouraging of health system by providing change of generations within the framework of health care system in the state in the aggregate
  • Ensure acquirement of education in the midwifery programme in the course of branch and general education including the humanitarian and social sciences
  • Develop in the students active way of obtaining information, critical evaluation and application of theoretical and practical knowledge within pre-hospital and hospital periods
  • Create conditions to encourage formation of competitive professionals in accordance with the first level higher professional education and the requirements defined by the labour market and the European Community
  • Encourage professional growth and intellectual potential by developing the research in the midwifery programme

  • The student elaborates research qualification work, in which he / she reveals his / her theoretical and practical knowledge in the clinical subjects and passes Qualification examination consisting of verification of his / her theoretical knowledge and practical skills
  • Upon completion of the curriculum, the college-leaver is entitled to work at any health care establishment in Latvia or the European Community. They are entitled to continue their education in post-diploma educational programmes and at higher education establishments

Nurse / NURSING

Qualification: First level professional higher education / NURSING
Length of studies: 3 years (6 semesters) / 120 CP (180 ECTS)

  • Acquire first level higher professional education of a nurse and fourth level professional qualification

  • Provide the opportunity to prepare for continuation of education, in order to acquire the second level professional higher education and fifth-level professional qualification
  • Ensure educational quality and development in accordance with the labour market that would encourage the improvement of health care system
