Institute for Occupational Safety and Environmental Health (IOSEH), Agency of Rīga Stradiņš University, is a scientific institution was established by decision No. 1-2/17.04.07 of 17 April 2007 by the Senate of Rīga Stradiņš University.

Functions and aims

The agency has the following functions:

  • providing public services in the field of occupational safety and environmental health to state and municipal institutions, RSU and its structural units, as well as natural persons;
  • performing scientific activities and activities in the field of occupational safety and environmental health related to acquisition and improvement of scientific qualification;
  • preparing, entering and participating in the implementation of theoretical and practical research projects and programmes of RSU, national, and international level.

In order to fulfil its functions, the agency performs the following tasks:

  • guarantees qualitative training of students in the field of occupational safety and environmental health;
  • performs post-graduate training for physicians, doctoral students, and qualification raising for physicians and nurses in occupational medicine;
  • performs researches in the field of occupational safety and environmental health;
  • creates and maintains database on the health condition of victims of occupational diseases and victims of radiation exposure due to the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant;
  • performs regular supervision of occupational environment at the premises of RSU, informs employees on issues related to occupational safety and health and impact of hazardous factors on the health and prophylaxis of occupational diseases;
  • provides information to state and municipal institutions, employees and other persons on issues related to occupational safety and health.

The main aims of IOSEH studies:

  • study and improvement of occupational environment conditions;
  • early diagnosis of occupational diseases, rehabilitation and return to work of victims of occupational diseases;
  • improvement of health condition, working abilities, and life quality of the employees.

Organisational structure

The structure and structural units of the Institute for Occupational Safety and Environmental Health:

Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine

Head of department: Prof. Maija Eglīte

Main tasks of the department:

  • ensure training of students of the Medical Academy of Latvia in the field of occupational and environmental medicine;

  • prepare qualitative training aids for studies in the field of occupational and environmental medicine;

  • ensure post-graduate training for hygienists, physicians of occupational diseases, medical residents, nurses in occupational medicine, and other specialists in occupational health.

Laboratory of Hygiene and Occupational Diseases

Laboratory manager: Inese Mārtiņsone

Main tasks of the laboratory:

  • perform scientific and research activities in issues topical for occupational health

  • perform impact assessment of various environmental factors on the occupational health;

  • participate in the development of hygienic standards for chemical substances, pharmaceutical preparations, microorganisms, etc.;

  • perform toxicological and hygienic research for:

    • various chemical raw materials and household substances (pigments, creams, detergents, lacquers, etc.);
    • biologically active substances;
    • construction materials;
    • medical preparations;
  • perform analysis of various chemical substances in the air, environment, and water at the workplace, as well as in various biomaterials (blood, urine, hair, etc.);

  • perform measurement and analysis of various physical factors of the environment (noise, vibration, etc.).

  • Study of exogenic and endogenic factors affecting the health of inhabitants of Latvia
