The Institute of the History of Medicine was established in 1991.

Medical museology is a specific research direction that is related to the location of the unique Pauls Stradiņš Museum of the History of Medicine in Riga and its direct collaboration with Riga Stradiņš University both in the field of studies and research works.

In collaboration with Pauls Stradiņš Museum of the History of Medicine, the Institute publishes a collection of scientific articles “Acta Medico-Historica Rigensia” (Volume X — 2013).

Director of the Institute prof. Juris Salaks is a member of the presidium of the Baltic Association of the History and Philosophy of Science and the European Association of Museums of History of Medical Sciences. In 2001, prof. Juris Salaks received Pauls Stradiņš Award in Medical History. Currently development of pharmaceutical industry in the Baltic States and Russia until 1940 is within the scope of scientific interests.
