The beginnings of the Joint Laboratory of Clinical Immunology and Immunogenetics are linked with the Immunogenetics and Immunology Department of the Central Scientific Research Laboratory of Riga Medical Institute established in 1980. Laboratory of Clinical Immunology and Immunogenetics was established in 2006. RSU Laboratory of Clinical Immunology and Immunogenetics has been set up with appropriate technical equipment for the performance of human genome research. It is capable of ensuring and provides the private sector with all-inclusive range of services in the field of laboratory diagnostics and immunogenetics. Doctors, biologists and immunology experts are working at the laboratory. Main scientific research directions of immunogenetics and immunology experts are clinical immunology and immunogenetics problems, as well as other researches regarding immunogenetics in the cases of various diseases, population in immunogenetics and immuno-pharmacogenomics.

Activity and experience of the Joint Laboratory of Clinical Immunology and Immunogenetics:

  • Performance of scientific activity in the field of immunology, immunogenetics and medicine by developing applicable and fundamental researches to enhance science and higher education;
  • Preparation of new experts — doctors-immunologists, laboratory doctors, and laboratory assistants — in the field of immunology;
  • Performance of post-diploma training for doctors-immunologists and other experts to whom immunology is the basic speciality component (doctors-laboratory assistants, who mainly deal with immunological methods in tumour immunology, rheumatology, dermatology, transfusiology, immunonephrology, transplantology, immunodeficiency immunology, etc.);
  • Polimerase Chain Reaction (PCR) diagnostics — HLA genotyping, microbiological testing of clinical material; blood testing and implementation of scientific activity;
  • Qualified consultative, diagnostic assistance to the inhabitants of Latvia in all fields of clinical immunology.

The scientific research group of the Joint Laboratory of Clinical Immunology and Immunogenetics deals with scientific work in the field of clinical and special immunology and immunogenetics in collaboration with various academic structural units of RSU, Latvian and foreign establishments, as well as public organisations (immunologists, doctors, infectologists, etc.).

Scientific Priorities

  • HLA class I, II, III alleles correlates of diseases progression and treatment response
  • Bioinformatic study and localization of epitopes recognized by protective alleles in HIV polyprotein
  • haracterization of the effect of drug resistance on immune recognition
  • Identifications of MHC HLA and cytokine genes: research and clinical applications
