Anesthesiology & Reanimatology

The student scientific interest group of anesthesiology and reanimatology hosts meetings on average once a month, mainly theoretical, during which the members look into various anaesthesiology, reanimatology and intensive care topics. Presentations made by the members often include the most relevant modern research data and case report examples. Periodically, the Anesthesiology & Reanimatology student group also hosts events in English – these are usually larger meetings that go together with other RSU student scientific groups (for example, the to be expected joint session with the Traumatology and Orthopedics student scientific interest group this November).

In addition, the group updates its Facebook group followers on various local and international A & R conferences or symposiums and other events relevant to the given speciality.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact the head of the group via e-mail or Facebook.

Cardiology

The newly-formed RSU student scientific group of cardiology gathers medical students that are particularly interested in the field of cardiology. This group offers its members to expand their knowledge of cardiovascular diseases, meet people to share interests with, take part in discussions, do research in cardiology and, most of all, have a great time.

Each month the group has a theoretical session about a specific sub-specialty or disorder in cardiology, where the members of the group present and discuss their topics; the discussions are usually followed by comments and feedback from experienced cardiologists.

High scientific quality of presented works was achieved during the first semester of group’s work. Therefore, taking part in organization’s activities allows senior students to effectively update their knowledge of various cardiology topics, while younger colleagues can acquire skills in correct analysis of available scientific literature and practical application of the principles of evidence-based medicine.

During the practical sessions students have the chance to improve their skills in instrumental diagnostic methods in cardiology as well as take part in management of simulated clinical situations.

Neurology & Neurosurgery

The Neurology and Neurosurgery Group offers its members an insight into the major issues in neurology and neurosurgery as well as meet professionals working in the resepctive area. Start by joining our workshops to see whether neurology or neurosurgery is your future specialisation!

The group provides theoretical sessions where the members put together their presentations and discuss topical issues under the guidance of an expert. We also offer practical exercises with patient investigation and clinical case examination. The first practical lesson is traditionally dedicated to the neurological examination. The most active members may expand their knowledge in the emergency department or other departments along the way, which is a great opportunity to learn from neurologists or neurosurgeons!

Final exam – Olympiad: group members may participate in the neuroscience contest “Zelta āmuriņš” ("Golden Hammer").

Together we will succeed!

Obstetrics and Gynaecology

There is an opportunity for those students who are interested in obstetrics and gynaecology to attend meetings and to become members of Student scientific interest group in this speciality.

Once a month members and attendants of this group participate in a theoretical meeting where members of the interest group introduce other participants with their report. Theoretical meetings are made with clinical insight by presenting clinical case reports or new therapeutic and diagnostic methods consequently students develop analytic, practical and on evidence based opinion. In every theoretical meeting obstetrician-gynaecologist is present and shares his or her experience with student and also is active in discussions, which follow after every report.

The members of the group are also encouraged to learn useful skills and improve their knowledge in practical meetings, which are organised in hospitals or on simulators.

Group members participate in Debates and International Student Conference organised by Riga Stradins University, check their knowledge in Annual Obstetrics and Gynaecology Olympiad and also visit one regional hospital in Latvia every year.

One of the most important goals of the group is to enhance the research among students. In 2015/16 our interest group investigated septic complications after delivery and the results were reported in Riga Stradins University International Student conference; this year Student scientific interest group of Gynaecology and Obstetrics plan to cooperate with pathologists and geneticists to do research a bit differently than before and our group also have an intention to investigate the efficacy of early-onset neonatal sepsis prophylaxis in level II and III Perinatal centres in Latvia.

Riga Stradins University Scientific interest group of Gynaecology and Obstetrics cooperates with similar interest groups in Lithuania and Estonia – we visit each other annually and present exciting clinical case reports from our countries. We also collaborate with Latvian Association of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians and Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Riga Stradins University.

Time and place of meetings:
Third Tuesday of the month at 4:00 p.m. at Riga Maternity House’s Melka Auditorium; the time and place of the meetings may change, actual information is published on scientific interest groups’ page in facebook.com and also sent electronically to members and attendants of the group

Rehabilitology

Student scientific interest group of Rehabilitology unites the students of Medical and Rehabilitation faculties with the special interest in Rehabilitology and Physical Medicine. In our scientific interest group, we welcome prospective physicians, physiotherapists, ergotherapists, speech therapists, technical orthopaedists and nutrition specialists, because the themes and clinical cases we discuss at our meetings require multiprofessional approach and cooperation of different specialists.

Throughout the academic year, we discuss different current themes related to the neurological and neurosurgical, orthopaedic, cardiological, pulmonological, pediatric etc. patients rehabilitation, prophylaxis of early complications in traumatology, psychiatry and rheumatology.

Our common goal is to get deeper theoretical knowledge and better practical skills, encourage scientific work and to learn how to work in a multiprofessional team.

The meetings of our Student scientific interest group are organised once a month. Usually 3-4 thematic essays are being presented. As a rule, our supervisor and invited specialist take part in the meeting. They can give an advice and comments on the presentations and answer the students’ questions, encouraging discussions that way. Twice a year we organize practical meetings, where members of the interest group have opportunity to develop their practical skills in Rehabilitation.

There is an opportunity to develop a student scientific work individually or in groups. Scientific works can then be presented at the RSU International Student Conference, Klaipeda University Student Conference etc.

All the up-to-date information about our interest group is regularly sent to group members via email and posted on the group's Facebook page.

Surgery

kirurgijas-pulcins-logoThe University’s scientific student interest group of surgery was established in 1945 and managed by Professor Pauls Stradiņš. Today it consists of medical students who have an in-depth interest in surgical specialty and are willing to prove themselves in scientific activities.

Our goal is to generate interest in the surgical field among students, give them a chance to develop both broader theoretical and practical knowledge, and to encourage scientific research and activities.

The Surgery Interest Group holds theoretical and practical sessions once a month, during which students present their independent work and presentations with an overview of a particular topic in surgery and clinical cases, learn basic practical skills in surgery and at the end of the year group members present their own scientific research works.

Every year the Department of Surgery organizes a contest for students called 'Golden Scalpel' which is a multidisciplinary event that consists of both theoretical and multiple practical parts and where group members are given a chance to test and prove their knowledge, practical skills, speed and wit.

At the end of the academic year active group members receive a certificate for participation, if they have attended at least 75% of the held sessions.

Please note that the Surgery Interest Group's sessions are mainly held in the Latvian language.

Detailed information on the Group's monthly meetings and other news can be found on our internet blog and Facebook page; Group participants are also updated via e-mail on a monthly basis.
