Study course description
Preliminary Knowledge:
In the humanitarian and social sciences disciplines, which develop students' critical thinking skills, understanding of human as a living being and its importance in society. In foreign languages ​​(Russian, English or German, Latin). Preclinical disciplines: human anatomy, physiology, cellular and medical biology, microbiology, embryology, genetics, parasitology, medical and biophysics, medical chemistry, histology. Medical terminology in Latvian, English, Russian and Latin.
Objective:
The course is intended for 3rd year students of the Faculty of Nursing. In the study subject “Pediatrics and Patient Care” the student learns the structural and functional peculiarities of a healthy child, the regularities of growth and development and the principles and attitude towards working with children.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
The student's independent work includes the preparation of presentations and presentation during classes. Practical classes are used for the realization of the study course, in which students together with the teaching staff analyze the theoretical material, solve situation tasks, discuss clinical cases, participate in clinic conferences and councils. During the lessons, students perform clinical examinations of patients and work with medical histories.
Assessment Criteria:
The knowledge and skills of students in practical classes will be assessed via short quiz, analysis and discussion of theoretical material, clinical cases, and clinical situation tasks, reviewing each other’s work, preparation of written or oral reports; colloquiums, final test at the end of the study course.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:After successful completion of the study course „Paediatrics and care of a paediatric patient” student will be able to describe the role of paediatrics in medicine, its branches, and the general health status of children in Latvia. The students will be able to describe different age groups of children, to evaluate the role and proper collection techniques of anamnesis of paediatric patients, to describe the growth. The student will be able to understand the psyhosocial development of a child, and development of the language, perception, and personality. Students will be able to explain the principles of health promotion. To describe the structural peculiarities of the digestive, respiratory and urinary system, most common disorders. To explain the significance of nutrition in a growing organism, protection and promotion of breastfeeding, principles of artificial feeding of infants, as well as introduction of complementary foods. To gain insight in the formation and peculiarities of immune system in children. To gain insight into anatomical and functional peculiarities of a child’s organism, in growth and development, and most common childhood illnesses. To recognize most common infectious diseases in children, their treatment and prophylaxis. To know the immunization programme of the children in Latvia, the role of vaccination in infection control and prophylaxis.
Skills:This study course will improve the skills in learning and research, and application of acquired theoretical knowledge to practice. After the completion of the study course, students will be able to formulate key words and find the information on healthy child, in textbooks and online data bases.
Competencies:The study course will give competencies in understanding and apply the key concepts of the studied topics. The study course will improve the skills in research and methodology and will enable the students to quickly find information on healthy child and most common illnesses at different ages in textbooks and online databases. The study course will provide to collect anamnesis, perform and prevention within their competencies, and observing the principles of ethics and personal data protection. The students will be able to assess physical development of a child and prophylactic measures appropriate to the age of the child.
