The Traumatology and Orthopaedics Interest Group provides the framework and place for enthusiasts of this field to meet, both junior and senior students from the Faculty of Medicine who have an interest and desire to acquire in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge of trauma and orthopaedics.

The main goal of this group is to promote and expand the theoretical basis and practical skills of every student interested in trauma and orthopaedics. Students have the opportunity to get information on how to treat everything from a simple fracture to refined reconstructive operations at group sessions.

The group's sessions are held once a month on the premises of RSU Department of Orthopaedics at the Hospital of Traumatology and Orthopaedics (22 Duntes iela). A practical session is held each semester where students can learn about immobilisation, how to measure joint movement ranges, various surgical suturing techniques and the osteosynthesis of bones. In previous years these sessions have attracted the greatest attention of students, because of the opportunity to train practical skills. Theoretical sessions cover topics ranging from basic trauma and orthopaedics to complex clinical cases performed by our senior peers. An olympiad is held in the spring semester that gives everyone the opportunity to show their knowledge of traumatology and orthopaedics. Research work carried out by students is presented within the interest group. Final-year students often develop their research work into research papers.

In addition, the student research group updates information about conferences in the field, courses and other events, enabling the most active students to participate.
