Objective

1. Promote acquisition of knowledge about plant and animal world and its place of elements in systematic, morphological and anatomical structure and use in medicine and pharmacy.
2. Promote acquisition of knowledge for further studies in Pharmacognosy with Phytotherapy study course.

Prerequisites

The knowledge of general biology and Latin language.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon completion of the course the students will be able to:
• systematise structure of organic world, vegetation place and role in it;
• define systematics of higher plants, its morphological and anatomical characteristics;
• define systematics of lower plants, its morphological and anatomical characteristics;
• identify and describe the most common higher plants in the flora of Latvia, their use in medicine and pharmacy;
• identify and describe the most common lower plants, their use in medicine and pharmacy;
• identify and describe the most common representatives of animal world that are used in medicine and pharmacy;
• describe plants' morphological structure using professional terminology;
• describe plants' anatomical structure using professional terminology;
• explain structure of plant cells and tissues and their functions.

Skills

Upon completion of the course the students will be able to:
• evaluate the variety of plant world;
• determine plant location in systemical classification and recognise seen plants, apply determinants of plants in other plants recognition;
• distinguish and explain higher and lower plants morphological and anatomical structure;
• show plants breeding and growth cycles;
• identify, describe and illustrate elements of plant cells and tissues;
• explain use of higher, lower plants and representatives of animal world in medicine and pharmacy.

Competence

Upon completion of the course the students will be able to interpret role and location of plants in systematics of the organic world, peculiarities of morphological and anatomical structure and their association with medicinal effect, as well as apply the acquired knowledge practically.
