Objective

To acquire knowledge about the system of circulation of technical aids in Latvia and the role of an occupational therapist in the provision of technical aid service.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of human functioning, disability, Universal Design concept, environment, neurology, orthopaedics, paediatrics, occupational therapy and somatic conditions, ergonomics and work.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

As a result of successfully completing the course, the student will be able to:
• explain the process of circulation of technical aids at the expense of the state budget in accordance with laws and regulations;
• describe the basic principles of selection and adaptation of technical aids for people with different functional limitations;
• explain the clinical thought process of an occupational therapist in the provision of a technical aid service.

Skills

As a result of successfully completing the course, the student will be able to:
• assess a person’s functioning according to the levels of functioning listed in the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health: body, person, societal level and contexts;
• analyse assessment data and interpret the assessment, educating the customer/patient, relatives, other medical practitioners about the assessment results;
• identify and assess a person’s needs for technical aids according to the ICF levels of functioning;
• assess the appropriateness of a technical aid to the person’s functioning and environmental context;
• prepare an occupational therapist’s opinion for receiving a technical aid in accordance with the laws and regulations;
• explain the basic principles of using the technical aid to the customer/patient, relatives and support persons;
• present the group work.

Competence

During the course, the student will improve the skills to select and analyse information, cooperate, demonstrate clinical thinking skills, presenting and arguing their opinion, take responsibility and initiative while working in a group.
