Disaster Medicine. Toxicology and Narcology (AURK_017)
About Study Course
Objective
The goal of the course is to provide knowledge of disaster medicine, organizational structure and management principles of health effects of disasters, as well to provide knowledge about the epidemiology of acute poisoning, routes of exposure, toxicokinetics, clinical course and treatment options of certain types of poisons.
Prerequisites
Knowledge acquired in previous study years in topographic anatomy, pathological physiology, biochemistry, clinical pharmacology, course of surgical (traumatic) and therapeutic pathologies and treatment options, clinical laboratory examinations, as well as first aid for patients primary and secondary on-site examination and basic life support algorithm, and the basic principles of health care organization.
Learning outcomes
If the study course is successfully completed, students will have acquired the knowledge of the consequences of disaster medicine, principles of providing of emergency assistance to the largest possible number of casualties in the shortest possible time, as well will acquire knowledge about clinical toxicology.
Students will be able to provide triage on the accident site and at the hospital and emergency treatment according to the priority, as well based on anamnesis, patient complaints, clinical symptoms and laboratory test; will be able to diagnose poisoning, to assess severity and extent of treatment required.
Understanding the assessment of the medical consequences of the disaster and possible threats, on the sorting of the victims and the volume of emergency assistance in the various stages of liquidation of the medical consequences of the disaster, given the limited medical resources; competences to take individual action decisions, according to the situation, while working in a team and following the general instructions for disaster management; competences on the risk factors of acute exogenous intoxication, epidemiology, on the preparation of a diagnostic, immediate diagnostic plan and far-reaching tactics based on the arguments of the acute toxicological patient, linking it to a specific clinical situation and demonstrating individual treatment of the patient.
