Objective

To provide theoretical and practical knowledge about the peculiarities of elderly care, evaluation, observation, applying the holistic care model in maintaining the quality of life and to provide knowledge about home care measures and their implementation.

Prerequisites

Anatomy and Physiology, Pathological Physiology, Pharmacology, Care Process, Medical Ethics, Interpersonal Interaction in Health Care, Introduction to Evidence Based Care.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

As a result of the study course students will be able to define and describe the general psychological and physiological changes and characteristics of the older adults. Students will be able to describe the needs of older adults (social, mental, physiological), to define and formulate care problems.
As a result of the study course students describe the home care activities and the care models used; are aware of the role and activities of health care services in providing patient care and the prerequisites for achieving efficiency and quality of care.

Skills

As a result of the study course students will be able to evaluate the psychological and physiological changes and peculiarities of the older adults. To evaluate and analyse the problems of older adults self-care and adaptation. As a result of the study course students are able to identify the patient's needs in the context of home care, understand the involvement of individual specialists in care.

Competence

Students will be able to analyse care and behavioural problems in case of morbidity, as well as assess and utilise communication features in patients with Alzheimer's disease and age-related dementia. Will be able to explain and perform patient care following a holistic care model. Learn to identify and logically analyse care problems. Apply the acquired knowledge and skills in the realisation of patient home care.
