Objective

The aim of the course is to create an understanding of the basic principles, content and importance of medical rehabilitation in the provision of health care services, providing information about the organization of medical rehabilitation in the Latvian health care system, the goals, tasks and practical use of medical rehabilitation in medical and social aspects, comprehensive human health and health-related conditions assessment principles, in accordance with the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), as well as introducing the principles of multiprofessional team work and the competencies and roles of the involved rehabilitation professionals in the rehabilitation team.

Prerequisites

Of professional study courses according to the specialisation of each student, assessment and classification of functional capacity limitations.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

On successful course completion students will gain knowledge about the types of medical rehabilitation services, inclusion criteria and basic principles of medical rehabilitation, as well as students will gain knowledge about the competencies of professionals involved in the medical rehabilitation process and their role in a multiprofessional rehabilitation team.

Skills

On successful course completion students will be able to analyze clinical cases using the basic principles of ICF and relevant core sets of ICF, will explain the basic principles of assessing functional abilities within the rehabilitation team, will be able to cooperate within the rehabilitation team and set long-term and short-term rehabilitation goals, will be able to participate in the preparation of an individual rehabilitation plan, will be able to prepare an individual rehabilitation a plan, using appropriate rehabilitation technologies, to assess rehabilitation outcomes and plan subsequent rehabilitation services.

Competence

On successful course completion students will be able to use the acquired knowledge and skills in multiprofessional rehabilitation teams:
• interpret various aspects of functioning – body function and structure, activities and participation, as well as their interaction with health status and contextual factors;
• make a choice of assessment tools according to the clinical situation;
• participate in the creation of a rehabilitation plan for various clinical situations;
• discuss the possible solutions of the identified problems within the framework of the medical rehabilitation system.
