Objective

Develop understanding of the origins and development of European national law up to recent times. Enable students to acquire knowledge of the issues of genesis, evolution and transformation of the European legal thought from ancient to modern times.

Prerequisites

History of Latvian Law.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

On completion of the study course, students will have acquired knowledge of the history of law in Europe within the context of the origins and development of law, the functioning of law institutes over the centuries to the present day, and will have broadened their horizons, which will help them in their further studies and practice in juridical science.

Skills

On completion of the study course students analyse, compare and work with various legal monuments, scientific and legal literature, are able to analyse different historical regularities in the development of state, society and law, are able to see challenges and their solutions.

Competence

On completion of the course, students are able to focus on today’s latest legal topicalities and their historical regularities, are able to develop scientific work by expressing their opinion, justifying it and proposing new ideas.
