Objective

• To promote the acquisition of knowledge of the main groups of drugs, their chemical structure and properties.
• To promote awareness of the drug structures, synthesis, qualitative and quantitative analysis.
• To promote therapeutic objective analysis and interpretation skills.
• To acquire the advantages and disadvantages, practical application of drugs' physico-chemical properties.
• To promote awareness of the effects of the chemical structure on drug substances, the mechanism of action, origin of side effects.

Prerequisites

Pharmaceutical chemistry, qualitative and quantitative analysis, organic and inorganic chemistry, pharmacology, physics, mathematics.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

On successful acquisition of the course the students will be able to:
• recognise and name the drug substance belonging to a particular pharmacological classes according to their chemical structure;
• evaluate the therapeutic drug substances activity, depending on the chemical structure, physico - chemical properties;
• compare the drug substance among the same therapeutic group;
• demonstrate knowledge of the drug substances anticipated reactions of origin mechanism and incidence;
• evaluate the effect of non-drug related factors on the therapeutic effect.

Skills

On successful acquisition of the course the students will be able to:
• apply the appropriate qualitative and quantitative analysis method of drugs;
• collect and systematise scientific information about drugs, their properties, the use in medicine;
• make presentations and research projects on medicinal substances, summarising the latest information from the clinical trials published in the recent years.

Competence

On successful completion of the study course, students will be able to make practical use of chemical analysis methods for analysis of different drugs; will be able to analyse the effect of chemical structure on the drugs' mechanism of action and properties; will be able to evaluate the drug substance among the same therapeutic class, depending on the likelihood of side effects and the pharmacological effect; will be able to develop theoretical and practical projects, to interpret the data obtained in accordance with the specifics of the trial subjects.
