Objective

To acquire theoretical knowledge of types of intellectual property, including copyrights, patent rights, trademark rights, design rights and rights to geographical indications, as well as to gain understanding of the specifics of intellectual property protection in order to successfully operate in international and Latvian business environment.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of the study course, students will recognise various types of intellectual property, name the most important Latvian and international regulatory acts that are important when doing business in the field of intellectual property law, will define the nature and objectives of intellectual property law in the context of entrepreneurship.

Skills

Successful completion of the study course will provide students with the skills to relate theoretical knowledge, assessing specific situations that are related to the issues of intellectual property law in business, to sum up relevant information on intellectual property law in the context of a specific problem situation, and correctly apply intellectual property laws and present the obtained knowledge publicly, logically evaluating the circumstances of the practical situations.

Competence

Based on their theoretical and practical knowledge, students independently formulate and critically analyse problem situations related to intellectual property law in business, substantiate their point of view and logically construct solutions to problem situations that will be tested in group work and case solving.
