Objective

The aim of the course is to consolidate the students' theoretical knowledge and practical skills of the most common chronic pathologies in adults, acquired during different study years at RSU Department of Internal diseases, to prepare students for further practical work, to teach in practice the necessary examination methods, manipulation in the examination of patients with endocrine, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, nephrological, respiratory, oncological and hematological diseases. Students are able to evaluate patient's symptoms, determine the diagnosis, the range of examinations required, evaluate the results of laboratory, radiological and functional examinations, stratify risks and develop a treatment plan. Practice rotation is a practical and integrative medical study organization format for medical teams.

Prerequisites

Prior knowledge in propedeutics, pathology, anatomy, pharmacology, immunology, dermatology, biochemistry. Students should be familiar with the subject matter learned in previous internal disease courses.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

As a result of the course acquisition the student will acquire knowledge and will be able to analyze and understand clinical, laboratory and visual examination methods of patients of different profiles. They will know and recognize the symptoms and algorithms of various diseases – investigation and treatment tactics, patient safety and clinical risk management, will be able to recommend evidence based recommendations, will be able to apply critical thinking and synthesize knowledge.

Skills

Will be able to collect history, perform physical examination of patients, evaluate patient's vital signs (i.e. patient's state of consciousness, breathing, heart rate, central and peripheral pulse, arterial blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation, body temperature, diuresis), recognize hemodynamically unstable patients, administrate examinations and therapies, diagnose the patient, educate the patient on health and disease prevention issues, provide emergency care, draw up medical records, use information and communication technologies, observe general and professional ethics, organize one's own and teamwork. Students will be able to educate patients on rational use of medicines, possibilities of disease prevention, public health issues. Will be able to express sympathy in the conversation with the patient / loved one, to express a reasoned opinion. Will be able to check patients' compliance with treatment recommendations.

Competence

The acquired competencies of the study course will allow purposeful and structured examination of the patient's history, assessment of the patient's vital signs (namely, patient's state of consciousness, breathing, heart rate, central and peripheral pulse, arterial blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation, body temperature, diuresis) the components and symptomatology that affect it will allow the patient's health status to be evaluated, normality and deviation interpreted, and the finding and specific situation to be attributed, and the next tactic to be decided. It will allow to recognize acute medical conditions, to organize timely assistance, to interpret the results of various examinations and formulate the appropriate conclusions, to plan treatment tactics. The acquired competencies will allow to perform manipulations appropriate to the respective pathological condition, to write prescriptions, to fill in medical documentation in accordance with the requirements of regulatory enactments.
